There is an ongoing belief that to get traffic to your site from the search engines, your SEO must include title tags with your keyword (or key word phrase). I’m sure everyone you know has told you this. What do you think?…
Here’s my take from my studies…
I follow folks like Pat Marcello, Bill McRea, and all the folks from StomperNet when it comes to SEO and what is or is not required for SEO. They don’t always agree, of course. How could they? No one really knows exactly what Google and the search engines are looking for.
StomperNet is the king of SEO testing. You may be surprised at what they say about keywords in your title tags, and the effect it has on getting traffic to your site.
In fact, StompeNet very strongly asserts (and I agree) that a compelling title tag is much more important than a keyword stuffed title tag. Here’s why…
You should have several goals with your SEO. Among them, you want to increase online traffic, and you want the increase to be very, highly targeted traffic. You want this traffic to click through your ads and buy when they find your page. You also want to reach the first page of the search engine listing for your selected keyword phrases.
Which is most important for you as an entrepreneur or online business person?
I hope that it is for you to have targeted traffic that clicks through your ads and buys things! Am I right?
Also, it is just plain, simple fact that Google doesn’t require the keyword phrase to be in the title tag to rank well. Here’s proof I did only moments before I wrote this sentence.
Look at the image. It is the results of the search in Google for one of the keyword phrases in this article – “traffic to your site.” It is the top 4 listings for the search. How many of the results have the complete phrase in the title?
Is it starting to sink in?
StomperNet recommends, your title tag be 8 words or less, and no more than 65 characters- plus – it needs to be compelling. You must be in the conversation with your targeted traffic to get them to click through to your site. This is the most important thing when it all is said and done.
Therefore, your title tags on your web pages should be done just like headlines for Adwords, or any PayPerClick service. I hope this is sinking in.

Note: I am an affiliate for Pat Marcello’s course, but she doesn’t pay me to put up these plugs. I only earn money if you agree that the course is great. I already completed and tested the course. I find it to be the easiest course on SEO to follow, anywhere on the net. It has my highest recommendations.
