In the last post on devastating mistakes most people make, including me, when working to get traffic to your website, I showed you how focusing on keywords in title tags can be a big mistake in trying to increase online traffic.
Here’s a little more on the subject to wrap up your thoughts (apparently most have no thoughts because there are no comments).
- The major recommendations that come from StomperNet and other SEO experts are these:
- Your title tags should be 8 words or less, and 65 characters or less
- Title tags should be written just like headlines, direct and to the point to sell
- Keyword stuffed title tags reduce click through, so don’t do it
- Make you title tags match your conversation
If you are violating these principles, then you are passing up clicks. These concepts are truly easy to implement. So my personal opinion is…
Don’t be stupid. These conclusions were drawn through testing and real results at StomperNet. I have never found them to be wrong. And when things change, they are the first to know, because they tested it.
If targeted traffic is your goal (which I hope it is if you are trying to make money), then use the five principles above on all of your web pages, and you will see the difference as your pages are indexed and re-indexed in search engines.
I’m still guilty of violating these principles, and what I do is…
… as I update older pages, I update the title tags and descriptions. If you have a lot of websites, this can take time. So just do it when you open a page to edit, and include the title tag update as part of your revisions.
See you next time
