I’ve been told more than once that I use the word “stupid” much too often.
It’s true. When I see something stupid, I call it “stupid” without hesitation. That’s pretty much the way I am about everything. I call a rock a rock, a good a idea a “good idea”, and stupid – well, I call it “stupid.”
I do get frustrated when people repeatedly do the same stupid things. No doubt about that. At the point where a person keeps doing the same dumb thing over and over, I do have start believing they aren’t just stupid, but they are really clueless.
So if you are ready to get all steamed up at me, continue on, and don’t hesitate to leave your comments before you go.
What Really is Stupid
To me, stupid isn’t about intelligence. The fact is, I do stupid things, and very smart people do very stupid things. I try to avoid stupid things when building my business, as I do when just simply living my life. But I’m not perfect, so I accept that I will do some stupid things (just not as many dumb moves as many others).
Stupid isn’t about education. Very educated people do very stupid things. Problem is, we let them get away with it because we will actually believe that it can’t be stupid if this very educated person says to do it. Am I wrong?
Of course, there are those of you that will say I’m wrong, because you live in an imaginary world where you will believe stupid things just because “an expert” told you. Sorry — like I said, I will call a slug a “slug” without hesitation.
Stupid Things That Prove a Point
You don’t have to look far for proof that very smart people can make very stupid decisions simply by telling themselves over and over that it isn’t stupid.
Just look at our USA government. They think that they can get us out of a recession that was primarily caused by over spending (in many different ways) by doing more over spending. To top things off, there is about 35 to 40% of the population who actually believe this. Now that is stupid.
Just imagine if your business was in bankruptcy court (which is where the US government would be if they were abiding by the laws other businesses do), and you told the judge:
“Your honor. I realize that I got into this mess by over spending, and taking too much risk, and promising things I simply didn’t have the money to do, and I really have no legal obligation to do…”
“… but if you give me one more chance, I will simply increase my debt by about 100 times the amount that got me in trouble, and everything will be fine.”
What do you suppose the judge might do (besides laugh himself to death)?
Plain Life Perspective of Stupid Reasoning
Now imagine if you, as just the ordinary person you are or that I am, were an alcoholic. And you told your friends and family that you can kick this alcohol problem easily. All I need to do is just have a drink or two every day, and the problem will be gone? Would you believe that stupid analysis.
People irrationally make such conclusions when they aren’t really committed to changing or improving the conditions around them. They don’t get committed because it actually takes work and effort, and thus they will actually rationalize that just doing what they are comfortable with will work.
Real Life Stupid Today
What made me think of all of this is the snow storm that smashed the Washington DC area yesterday. You see, since I live here, I got to see what stupid things people will do in a snow storm and what crazy rationalizations they can concoct.
There are nearly 30 inches of snow on the ground (that’s a little less than 1 meter). For an area like DC, that amount of snow is nothing less than crippling to any activity that isn’t done on foot.
This morning I turn on the local news to watch people being stupid. One of the first stories is, of course, a man and his son stuck in the snow with their car.
Now, I’m not making this up, this guy actually told the news broadcaster this…
He was asked why he was out driving, and he tells the news man that he needed gas. So, at the very instance the snow has stopped, he gets in his car with his son to go get gas. This is only the beginning of stupid…
The big main streets are actually clear enough that emergency vehicles can use them safely. Somehow, the man in need of gas, got his car out of his neighborhood and then, at 7:00 in the morning on Sunday, the morning after 30″ of snow has fallen, drives to a gas station…
He turns in the station, which has not been plowed, and immediately gets stuck. Daaaaaah!
But here’s the ridiculous thing. He was planning to get stuck! He and his son had put snow shovels in the car, expecting to get stuck. So now he reaches the double stupid decision mark. He had not rationalized that he wouldn’t get stuck. He knew he would.
Yet he went anyhow. Then to top it all off, the gas station he turned into to get gas, wasn’t even open (of course not!), so he is stuck in the snow, trying to get gas at a gas station that isn’t open, and he had planned on getting stuck…
I can’t even imagine the reasoning that got him to take this “stupid” journey at all, since he actually planned on being stuck! Can you???
What’s it all Mean
So why this ranting today?…
That’s simple. I see and hear people searching for business ideas, and ways to make money online everyday. I get emails asking me for help (I actually try to answer them all). That’s great that you and others are trying…
However, I just don’t know how people get the “stupid” idea that they can go online and start a business for free, just because the read a web page by someone they don’t know, and that someone told them they could.
You and I both know there is no such thing as a business that builds and operates for free! Not online, not offline. Even a so-called Non-profit does not operate for free. They have to make a profit also…
Yet, literally millions of people continue to fall for the unbelievable offers and ideas that they will be rich tomorrow, and that they can do this for nothing. Don’t they even take a second to realize how ridiculous this notion is?…
I hope you’re not one of these people. Even if you are starting with nothing, you have to make a plan to create some income. The less money you have, the more selective and skillful you need to be about how you build your business.
But because you are broke, does not mean you can do it for free. I know… both I and my business partner were out right, flat broke when we started. But we didn’t try to start for free. We gave up time and effort, which eventually converted to cash.
We put every penny back into creating a business. We did some stupid things, for sure! But we didn’t repeat them. We learned. ..
So get committed, and get serious. Make a plan. When you do something stupid — learn, and march on. Everyone does stupid things.
