What’s it like when your website promotion techniques remainfocused on the methods and strategies that get you the best return for the least amount of time and money?  You don’t have to feel like being social to use social networks.  I invite you to notice what can social networks do for you?

One method to increase targeted website traffic that is frequently mentioned, is the use of social networks.  The term social networks include social bookmarking, and social micro-blogging.  You know what I mean – Digg, stumble upon, Reddit, Facebook, MyFace, etc.

With one exception, my experience is that I get little traffic directly from these sites.  Many people and gurus may have you chasing traffic here.  But I want you to understand how I see them and leverage them.  That fact is, there are many, many traffic experts that will tell you that trying to get traffic directly from social networks like Digg and Stumble Upon is very, very difficult.

Lend an ear to this: A likely reason is that people in these sites just don’t maintain their attention on anything for very long.  They have a habit of clicking from one thing to the next, and are very difficult to sell anything to.  If you are not an expert writer or public personality, you are likely better off using the social networks for a different type of web site promotion.

Remember, I use these sites primarily for Search Engine Optimization only (Yes the dreaded “SEO”).  As I  have described in previous posts, back links are very important in raising the relevance of your site.  This is why you should use social network sites.  To build back links.

So this type of web site promotion is definitely not for direct traffic in my scheme.  It is a key pillar of increasing targeted traffic from search engines.  For this reason, they should not be ignored.

It is also for this reason, that Wordpress plug-ins and themes that automate your back link submissions to social networks  and web 2.0 sites is critical to quickly capturing targeted visitors to your Wordpress blog or website.  Here’s the bottom line – It is one of the single most-important reasons I use the Atomic Blogging 3.0 blogging system and theme.

Let’s face the harsh realtiy that, if you have been trying to get direct traffic, from social networks (with one exception), and you have had minimal success, you can see that it is not really your fault.  Regardless, keep social networks in your strategy, because the back links you build will be part of a simple solution to increasing your search engine rankings.
